I’d like to touch on some myths surrounding anger, one of which is the assumption that God will remove our anger simply because we pray and fast. I’ve often observed great disappointment in those who expect God to do what He has entrusted them to accomplish. Unfortunately, many abdicate their authority and sovereignty in the process.

The key to dealing with anger is learning to die to your own will, feelings, and flesh. The good news is that there is a more effective way to address anger than simply relying on willpower. A strong will is never a permanent solution when it comes to emotions.

That said, we must hand over, yield, and surrender our will to the Spirit. This demands skill, insight, and wisdom—not merely trying harder. It’s a transformative process that takes time and intention.

I believe people will truly live in blessing if they become doers of the Word and not just hearers (James 1:22). However, the hurdle many face is the belief that we are powerless against our emotions, that “this is just the way we are.” This is the lie that many have come to believe, but it is not the truth.

Another significant factor in anger is the overwhelming surge of emotions that can occur, leaving the individual unsure how to handle the emotional overload. It’s important to recognise that, according to Romans 8:13, the flesh is put to death by the Spirit, but the Spirit must be trusted when we’re tempted to be impatient.

Trusting the Spirit, especially in moments of anger, will be one of the most challenging things you will ever do. Anger often arises when obedience is needed, and it may not feel like we’re in the Spirit, but the truth is if we trust the Word of God, we are.

It is crucial to identify the triggers and underlying emotional issues or attitudes that fuel anger if we are to have any chance of overcoming it. The good news is that you can overcome it—if you approach it correctly.
