Depression is often a by-product of unresolved emotional trauma and unprocessed issues within the conscience. For instance, when grief remains unprocessed, it can manifest as symptoms of depression. Many individuals overlook the fact that they are grieving their disappointments, meaning that the greater the disappointment, the more profoundly grief takes root.

Proverbs 13:12 states, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” This highlights the importance of taking disappointments seriously, as unacknowledged grief can lead to a loss of hope for the future, ultimately pushing a person into a depressive state.

Also, unaddressed guilt is another heavy burden that can contribute to depression, depending on the severity of the wrong committed. The World Health Organization identifies guilt as a leading cause of depression.

King David expresses this sentiment in Psalm 38:4: “My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.” This indicates that guilt is a burden, not a blessing. Many use guilt without realising it to rectify their past wrongs in an attempt to feel better about themselves, which contradicts the gospel of Christ.

Similarly, shame taints the conscience, often creating a cycle of anxiety and guilt that fuels depressive symptoms that individuals feel powerless against until they are identified, surfaced, and confronted. King Solomon also observed in Proverbs 12:25, “Anxiety in the heart causes depression.”

From my perspective, one of the most significant contributors to depression is a life devoid of meaning or purpose—something that can even lead to suicidal ideation.

The path forward requires processing each emotion, addressing unresolved issues of the conscience, and confronting thought patterns—whether they stem from phobic thinking, guilt-ridden mindsets, or self-hatred. By doing so, individuals can break free from the weight of depression and move toward healing.
