Depression is more than just sadness; it is often the result of a broken heart, leading to an emotional and mental shutdown. Many who suffer from depression struggle to connect the dots to the real issue. They feel the weight of their emotions but don’t know how to process them, making the experience even more depleting.

Simple tasks become overwhelming as the mind drifts into a state of emptiness. Social withdrawal starts to feel like the best option, leading individuals to avoid interactions with family and friends. Some turn to alcohol or drugs as a means of escape, while hobbies and activities that once brought joy lose their appeal. Concentration becomes difficult and making even small decisions feels exhausting.

The good news is that there is a way out and a way through. The first thing to understand is that depression is not a life sentence, even though it may feel like one. The second is that tools and support are available to help reassure your mind and heart as you navigate the valley. King David wanted to know why he was depressed before he approached God’s way.

In Psalm 42:5-6 (TPT), King David asked himself some questions: “So then, my soul, why would you be depressed? Why would you sink into despair? These are questions we should all reflect on. David’s answer is unique and unfamiliar to many believers today. He urged himself to “keep hoping and waiting on God, to sing and praise Him for the help of His presence, and to remember Him in the high times of his life.”

This isn’t a quick fix. It’s a God-fix solution that will free your soul and soothe your heart. I’ve found that being specific about where you’re hurting is where hope, praise, and remembrance take shape. These are a couple of keys to releasing yourself from this type of burden.
